Electronic Cigarettes in the News, 17 December 2014

To me, the single most amazing thing about Electronic Cigarettes is not that they make such a wide variety of flavours available, nor is it that they come in such a wide variety of styles and price ranges.

No, the thing that is the most amazing is that something that doesn’t burn with either flame or ember can cause such an unrelenting firestorm, of controversy, across the globe.

Reading through this week’s news, it once again becomes obvious that not even the experts can agree.

Without further ado, here's all the news, that’s in the news, that may well be news to you.

From the Colonies

I love using that phrase just to tick off our American cousins.

The major news from the US this week is the release of a major new survey from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. This Survey included more than 41,000 students in grades 8-12, spread across 377 schools, both public and private and representing a variety of socioeconomic areas.

The findings brought forth some interesting findings.

While there was a marginal rise in the use of Electronic Cigarettes among all groups, it was accompanied by a steep decline in the use of traditional tobacco products, with an average reduction of 50 percent over the last five years.

This, as was pointed out by Tim Worstall in a "Forbes "Magazine" article, closely coincides with the introduction of Electronic Cigarettes and shows evidence that the claims of those who say E-cigs and E-liquids are a gateway drug to traditional tobacco are unfounded and have been strongly disproven.

From The Emerald Isle

Just to show how confusing the issues surrounding Eliquids and Electronic Cigarettes are, we bring you this tid-bit from "The Irish Times".

It seems that the Irish Cancer Society (ICS) has called upon the Department of Public Health to declare Electronic Cigarettes and Eliquids to be Smoking Cessation Aids and to regulate them as such.

Of course the shocking part of this request is that it is attempting to have Electronic Cigarettes declared and regulated as the one thing that both the manufacturers and retailers such as ourselves at Exhale Cigarettes have been expressly forbidden to call them,..... quitting aids.

At Home

We have two news items from here at home.

In the first, the Cochrane Review has finally been made public and, as expected, is highly controversial; according to the study, authored by researchers here in Britain and from New Zealand, smokers who used Electronic Cigarettes, to try and quit, were twice as likely to be successful as those who received a placebo product.

They do acknowledge, though, that more research is needed due to the small sampling of only 662 participants.

The second story, from the home front has a slightly different taste to it. Please excuse the pun. It seems that besides Electronic Cigarettes, the authorities may have a bigger worry on their hands. "Metro" has reported that Electronic Joints will now be available to the public in Great Britain and, get this, they will be legal.

The new products closely mirror, Electronic Cigarettes in form and function, however they are cannabidiol based rather than being nicotine based.

The products are technically legal under British law as they do not contain THC, the psychoactive compound found in marijuana.

At this time The Home Office has refrained from comment, but we will definitely keep you informed on future developments with this story.
